What do we need to get started?
An iPhone or iPad, a pencil, some paper, and a grown-up nearby. Letter adventures take about five minutes; writing projects for older children take as long as they like. There's no timer.
Does it cost anything?
Pencil Pals is free to download and use right now, with every letter, word and project included.
Which letter style does it teach?
Victorian Modern Cursive, unjoined, as taught in Victorian schools. If your child's school uses a different style, demonstrate from the school's model and follow your teacher's advice.
How do I get into the grown-ups area?
Tap "For grown-ups" and answer the multiplication question. It's there so children can't change settings, share notes or leave the app by accident.
Can more than one child use it?
Yes. Add a pal for each child. Each pal keeps their own progress, and you can switch between them on the home screen.
How do I start again?
In the grown-ups area, choose "Clear saved progress on this device". This removes everything the app has saved on that device and can't be undone.
Does it check or mark my child's writing?
No. Pencil Pals never scores handwriting or diagnoses difficulties. A grown-up notices how the letter went and records it if they like. If you have concerns about your child's writing, talk to their teacher.
